Finalists of DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge Asia 2017

FINALISTS ANNOUNCEMENT

They’re passionate, innovative, and creating a better future for Asia. DBS Foundation and NUS Enterprise are thrilled to announce the 25 finalists of the DBS-NUS Social Venture Challenge Asia 2017.

The 25 finalists — 10 from the Idea Category and 15 from the Enterprise Category — hail from 10 diverse countries, with 9 different sectors of social impact.

If your team is one of the finalists, congratulations! We will be in touch with you through e-mail by 15 August (Tues) with more instructions.

ONLINE VOTING PERIOD

Vote for your favourite ideas and enterprises and get them one step closer to achieving their goals! The online voting will be held on the Asia For Good by DBS Foundation website on the following dates:

  • Idea Category 14 Aug – 1 Sept 2017 — Online voting on the Top 10 Idea teams will form a proportion of the overall scores in selecting the top 2 ideas who will be flown to Singapore!
  • Enterprise Category 4 – 22 Sept 2017 — Online voting on the Top 15 Enterprise teams to determine the Asia For Good Reader’s Choice Award winner, who will receive a special prize at the Awards Ceremony in October 2017! CLICK HERE to watch their videos and vote for your favourite team now!

Idea Category Finalists

1B Global

Country: Singapore

Sector: Energy & Environment

1B Global is empowering local communities in Cambodia through training villagers to become entrepreneurs with a “business in a box” franchise model. Its high-illumination portable LED lanterns powered by rechargeable lithium batteries will provide those at the bottom of the pyramid with access to safe and affordable energy.

CocoAsenso

Country: The Philippines

Sector: Agriculture

CocoAsenso hopes to make the country’s Virgin Coconut Oil industry more efficient and inclusive, by establishing a network of small-scale coconut processing facilities in remote regions. These farmers will be offered fair prices and employment, as well as training and financing to improve crop production.

Evoware

Country: Indonesia

Sector: Energy & Environment

Evoware is solving plastic waste in Indonesia with its edible, eco-friendly and biodegradable bioplastics made from sustainably produced seaweed, which can be used as an alternative to traditional plastic packaging.

Gaselo Folklife Village

Country: Bhutan

Sector: Tourism

Gaselo Folklife Village provides a platform for sustainable tourism with the help and complete involvement of the local community, allowing travelers to experience Bhutan’s culture and heritage. The venture will also provide employment and business opportunities to the locals of Gaselo and encourage them to preserve its traditions.

iHB

Country: India

Sector: Healthcare & Sanitation

iHB’s smartphone-based low-cost haemoglobin reader uses a simple dry blood spot assay strip for testing and gives accurate results, which makes them suitable for personal monitoring or mass screenings in resource poor settings.

NeMo.Care

Country: India

Sector: Healthcare & Sanitation

NeMo.Care’s portable IOT-enabled wearable device is worn on the newborn’s foot and monitors their vital signs. It addresses the need for a low cost, highly accurate continuous monitoring system for the detection of Apnea and Hypothermia in newborns, alerts nurses to provide timely intervention and securely stores the data.

Nosacle

Sector: Healthcare & Sanitation

Nosacle believes that everyone has the right to breathe pure air. Their integrated personal air purification solution uses non-membranous, mucus-inspired technology to trap pollutants from air, based on fluid mechanics and molecular trapping mechanisms to achieve high purification efficiency with minimal breathing resistance.

One Degree Production Service

Country: Hong Kong

Sector: Healthcare & Sanitation

One Degree Production Service provides low cost, lightweight 3D printed prosthetics to needy upper limb amputees. They aim to collaborate with Hong Kong schools to establish 3D printed prosthetics workshops as part of STEM education, with the prosthetics distributed for free by NGOs in developing countries.

Tactopus

Country: India

Sector: Education

Tactopus is an inclusive education tool for children with visual impairments to interact with smart tactile graphics. This low cost device uses computer vision to bring technology to tactile learning, providing independent learning opportunities for visually impaired children.

Wobble Base Bioresearch

Country: India

Wobble Base Bioresearch provides affordable HIV viral load testing systems in a point of care setting, through converting the ubiquitous glucometer used by diabetics into a HIV monitoring tool. These testing systems can also be used for home testing of HIV and other diseases, allowing the poor to seek proper and timely treatment.

Beijing 0fenbei Technology (零分贝) makes poverty alleviation more efficient and sustainable by using big data and internet technology to connect communities in need with resource providers such as NGOs, local governments and commercial institutions. It enables more social resources to be channelled into less developed regions to help address poverty issues.

Cattle Mettle

Cattle Mettle helps marginal and small rural dairy farmers increase their cattle productivity and household income. It manufactures quality, natural and affordable cattle feeds by restructuring locally available fruit and vegetable waste into edible products. Their holistic online-offline model helps farmers choose the best nutrition for their cattle at a cost they can afford, delivered to their doorsteps.

Crowde

Crowde is a crowd-investing web platform that helps poor farmers raise working capital by connecting them to retail investors, with a win-win profit sharing scheme. By partnering with trusted farming communities, it commits to increasing farmers’ capabilities while also ensuring a profitable return for investors.

EcoAct Tanzania

EcoAct Tanzania uses an innovative plastic extrusion technology to recycle and transform post-consumer plastic waste into plastic lumber for building, construction and furniture. It acts as a durable and affordable alternative to wood timber, helping to reduce deforestation and addressing pollution caused by plastic waste.

Haqdarshak Empowerment Solutions

Country: India

Sector: Financial Services

Haqdarshak helps poor citizens discover and apply for government and non-governmental financial schemes they are entitled to, by training a network of community entrepreneurs to deliver this service through an AI-based mobile and web platform that assesses their scheme eligibility. It also works with government and private organisations to digitise scheme information.

HelpUsGreen

Country: India

HelpUsGreen upcycles waste discarded into sacred Indian rivers by temples and mosques through a ‘flowercycling®’ concept. It provides livelihoods to manual scavenger women by employing them to process floral-waste into organic fertiliser, natural incense and Florafoam®, a biodegradable alternative to plastics.

Knight Digital Technology (俠客數位科技有限公司)

Knight Digital Technology is generating a circular economy for furniture in Taiwan. Its automated platform matches empty delivery trucks to jobs along their return journey, minimizing wasted man-hours and fuel. Its digital marketplace for donating unwanted large furniture enables such furniture to be re-used by those in need, reducing the amount of pollution generated by discarded furniture.

POS!BLE.NET

POS!BLE.NET makes financial services and e-commerce more accessible to underserved communities. Its B2B2C platform enables community-based microbusinesses to become local touchpoints for financial and e-commerce transactions, through equipping them with low-cost, internet-enabled, portable point-of-sale machines.

SLCO Community Resources

SLCO Community Resources provides a bilingual language development programme for parents and young children, both deaf and hearing. Using both sign and oral language as a medium of instruction, it enhances children’s language and cognitive development, and promotes social inclusion through having a mixture of deaf and hearing individuals in its classes.

TEMU wants to break the cycle of poverty in urban slums through providing low-skilled workers with access to job opportunities. Their mobile and web application collects data from job providers and job seekers, and synthesizes the data to match individuals with the right job opportunities.

WeCare.id

WeCare.id is a peer-to-peer medical crowdfunding platform that enables poor and underserved patients to secure funding for their medical treatments through direct case-based donations. Its membership scheme also acts as a form of micro-insurance to ensure long-term care for patients.
